On August 8, 2024, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 813/QĐ-TTg recognizing Dong Ha City as a type-II urban area.
Under the decision, from August 8, 2024, Dong Ha City is classified as a type-II urban area under Quang Tri province, encompassing the entire administrative territory of the current Dong Ha City, which includes nine wards and covers a total area of 73.09 km2.
The Prime Minister has assigned the Ministry of Construction, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Chairman of the Quang Tri Provincial People’s Committee, and relevant agencies to implement Decision No. 813/QĐ-TTg.
Dong Ha serves as the political, economic, cultural, and social center of Quang Tri province, located at the intersection of National Route 1 connecting Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, as well as the trans-Asian road system linking Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar with neighboring countries. Currently, Dong Ha City consists of nine wards, covering an area of 73.09 km2, with a population of 164,228 people, including 102,478 permanent residents and 61,750 adjusted residents.

In December 2005, Dong Ha was recognized by the Ministry of Construction as a type-III urban area. In August 2009, the government issued a resolution recognizing it as a city under the province.
With its advantages as a commercial, service, and industrial center of the province, Dong Ha has seen significant investment and development in infrastructure and facilities over recent years, rapidly transforming the urban landscape. The city is also home to various provincial administrative agencies, central government units, and state-owned enterprises. The workforce has been increasing in both scale and quality, with a growing team of scientific and technical personnel driving Dong Ha’s development.
Alongside the rapid changes in urban appearance, there have been many positive shifts in social and cultural sectors. Education and training have developed significantly in both scale and quality, raising the overall literacy level. Cultural and sports activities have expanded widely and deepened engagement.
Social welfare and healthcare services have received considerable attention. National security and defense have been maintained, ensuring safety and social order.
