A key transport route connecting Quang Tri Province with central Laos and northeastern Thailand is in urgent need of repair due to severe deterioration.
Authorities in the central province of Quang Tri has asked the government to provide support for restoring a crucial section of National Highway 12A, which runs from Vietnam’s Cha Lo International Border Gate to Naphao in Laos’ Khammouane Province.

The funding, the province proposed, should come from Vietnam’s official development assistance (ODA) allocated for this project. The road, which passes through the Cha Lo–Naphao International Border Gate, plays a strategic role in cross-border trade between Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. It facilitates the flow of goods such as agricultural produce, machinery, and construction materials. However, the deteriorating condition of the road and frequent traffic congestion at the border gate have become major obstacles to logistics and trade. To ensure safety and enable emergency repairs, Naphao border authorities have imposed nighttime traffic restrictions, from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., along an 18-kilometer stretch from the Vietnam–Laos border marker to Lang Khang junction in Khammouane Province. The restriction, which took effect on May 15, will remain in place until the repairs are completed.Quang Tri officials say restoring the road will help smooth import–export activities, strengthen regional connectivity, and contribute to socio-economic development across the border region.
