Located in the Central Truong Son region in the western part of Quang Tri, the Bac Huong Hoa Nature Reserve is renowned for its unique natural landscape, diverse ecosystem, refreshing climate, and the distinct cultural identity of the local ethnic groups.
With its abundant natural resources, the reserve holds great potential to become a sought-after eco-tourism destination, drawing nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike.
Spanning nearly 23,500 hectares across five communes in Huong Hoa District, the Bac Huong Hoa Nature Reserve is often referred to as the “roof” of Quang Tri. It is home to the towering Voi Mep peak, which rises over 1,700 meters above sea level, as well as the cool and refreshing Sa Mu Pass, known for its year-round pleasant climate. The reserve’s rugged terrain has shaped its stunning landscapes, featuring majestic mountains, rivers, waterfalls, and remarkable caves.

As the lowest region of the Truong Son mountain range, the Bac Huong Hoa Nature Reserve is rich in biodiversity, thanks to the convergence of northern and southern plant flows, as well as the Indochinese region. With nearly 93% forest coverage, the area provides a thriving habitat for a diverse array of flora and fauna, including numerous rare and endemic species. The reserve also plays a crucial role in preserving upstream forest ecosystems and supplying water to major rivers such as the Ben Hai, Rao Quan, Hieu, and Se Pang Hieng, making significant contributions to Quang Tri’s irrigation and hydropower systems.
Surveys show that the Bac Huong Hoa Nature Reserve is home to an impressive 1,327 plant species across 157 families, including 156 rare species such as Dinh Tung, false cypress, Paris polyphylla, and Paphiopedilum. The reserve’s fauna is equally diverse, with 935 species, 97 of which are classified as endangered or rare. Notable species include the Annamite striped rabbit, Javan pangolin, southern white-cheeked gibbon, Hatinh langur, red-shanked douc, and serow.
The reserve also boasts a rich avifauna, with 208 species across 49 families. Among them, 8 species are listed in the Vietnam Red Book, and 11 are on the global Red List, including the great hornbill, white pheasant, and crested argus. Additionally, the reserve is home to 81 species of amphibians and reptiles, 33 species of fish, and 503 species of insects. According to Ha Van Hoan, Director of the Bac Huong Hoa Nature Reserve Management Board, the reserve’s rich biodiversity and stunning natural landscapes present significant potential for eco-tourism development, scientific research, and environmental education. He highlighted Sa Mu Pass as an ideal spot for leisure tourism, thanks to its refreshing climate and unique atmosphere.

Visitors to the Bac Huong Hoa Nature Reserve can enjoy a variety of activities, including camping, cloud-hunting, and sightseeing from above, all while exploring the rich natural forest ecosystem. One of the reserve’s standout attractions is Tria Cave, located in Tria Village, Huong Son Commune. Known for its breathtaking stalactite formations, the cave also offers the unique opportunity to observe rare langur species in their natural habitat.
The reserve offers exciting opportunities such as exploring the peaks of Pa Thien and Voi Mep, immersing in the lush forest environment, and admiring the stunning beauty of rhododendron blooms. Visitors can also visit the botanical garden, where rare and endemic plants are preserved, providing a perfect blend of research opportunities and sightseeing. Sa Mu Pass is another highlight, offering a cool, refreshing climate and the chance to learn about the unique flora and fauna of the area.
In addition, exploring Tria Cave offers a thrilling adventure, with its mesmerizing stalactite formations and the opportunity to observe endangered langurs in their natural habitat.
