A new museum in the central province of Quang Tri will serve as a powerful tribute to the enduring desire for peace and unity among the local people, while sharing poignant wartime stories with visitors from around the world. The project, designed to both commemorate history and inspire hope, is set to become a must-see destination for tourists, both domestic and international.
A meeting between the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism and the People’s Committee of Quang Tri Province was held on January 15 in Hanoi to finalize plans for this significant cultural landmark.

During the meeting, Vice Chairman of the Quang Tri Provincial People’s Committee Hoang Nam presented a proposal for the National Museum “Memories of War and Aspiration for Peace.” The project, which has received endorsement from key government figures, including the Chairman of the National Assembly and the Prime Minister, will be led by Quang Tri Province.
The museum aims to showcase a wide range of artifacts and documents, providing visitors with an emotional and in-depth look into Vietnam’s wartime history, while highliting the country’s collective yearning for peace and national unity. The museum is expected to become a significant cultural landmark, drawing both domestic and international tourists, and will be a central highlight on the DMZ tourism route, enriching the province’s war memory landscape.
The Quang Tri People’s Committee has proposed the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism include the project in the Feasibility Study Report for the National Target Program on Cultural Development for the 2025-2035 period. With an estimated budget of VND1 trillion (approximately US$42.5 million), the museum is set to be developed between 2026 and 2030 through a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
The province has requested the ministry’s support in selecting an experienced consultancy to conduct surveys and design the museum’s architectural plans.
Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism Hoang Dao Cuong said that Quang Tri is a region deeply marked by sacrifice, suffering, and the scars of war - making it an ideal location for a museum dedicated to peace, freedom, and unity.
Beyond the museum, visitors to Quang Tri will also be drawn to its significant historical sites, including the Quang Tri Citadel, the Hien Luong-Ben Hai Banks, the Vinh Moc Tunnels, the Vinh Linh Tunnel Village System, and the Truong Son National Martyrs’ Cemetery. These sites serve as solemn reminders of the sacrifices made by the people, as well as powerful reflections on Vietnam’s painful past.
Located near the Hien Luong-Ben Hai Special National Monument, the museum will further cement Quang Tri’s role as a cultural and historical hub, making it a fitting home for a national museum of such importance.
For the investment plan, funding for the project will be fully allocated from the central government budget under the National Target Program for Cultural Development for the 2025-2035 period, with an estimated VND1 trillion as proposed by the Quang Tri Provincial People’s Committee.
