Vietnam Wafer proposes US$3.7 million semiconductor materials project in Quang Tri

Vietnam Wafer Joint Stock Company proposed a VND96 billion (US$3.7 million) investment to build a semiconductor material production facility in Quang Tri Province, using high-quality quartz sand to supply advanced technology industries including semiconductors, optics, and optoelectronics.

This investment marked Phase 1 of the Vietnam Wafer Semiconductor Materials Complex project, to be located in the Quan Ngang Industrial Park in Gio Linh District. The proposal was presented by Vietnam Wafer CEO Chau Hoang Long during a working session with Vice Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee Le Duc Tien on June 13.

Long emphasized Vietnam’s growing role in the global semiconductor supply chain, noting the country’s strategic ambition to become a chip manufacturing hub in Asia.

He added that Quang Tri, located on the ancient Kon Tum continental block, one of Southeast Asia’s three oldest geological formations, is rich in high-quality natural quartz resources.

“Our research shows that Quang Tri holds significant potential for developing high-tech and semiconductor manufacturing projects based on its abundant white sand resources,” Long said.

According to the investment plan, the company aims to complete the construction of the factory, install and test-run the ultra-pure quartz production line by March 2026. Commercial production and market supply are scheduled to begin in April 2026.

The proposed complex will cover an area of about 11 hectares. Future phases include the construction of a quartz crucible factory with an annual capacity of 13,000 units; a crystal silicon rod factory with a capacity of 30 tons per month; a wafer substrate factory producing 50,000 semiconductor wafers per month; a high-purity carbon manufacturing facility with a capacity of 1,000 tons per year; and an R&D center for experimental chip production.

Vice Chairman Le Duc Tien affirmed provincial support for the project, stating that Quang Tri possesses substantial reserves of high-grade sand that could serve as the foundation for building a local semiconductor industry.

He directed provincial departments to coordinate closely with the investor to accelerate investment procedures and facilitate project implementation.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, Quang Tri currently has five approved white sand mining zones totaling more than 1,075 hectares, with estimated reserves of 56.4 million tons.

Four of these five zones have received extraction licenses from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment.
