Quang Tri strengthens strategies to boost border trade development

Quang Tri Department of Industry and Trade will continue to advise the provincial People’s Committee on the implementation of plans to manage border trade in line with the Vietnam-Laos border trade agreement. This includes a strategic focus on developing border trade in Quang Tri Province.

Key efforts will prioritize enhancing border trade infrastructure, such as logistics centers, warehouses, dry ports, and markets, with particular focus on the Dakrong District border area. Quang Tri will support the export and import of coal between Vietnam and Laos, as well as energy connection projects linking Laos to Vietnam.

The province will also promote initiatives aimed at boosting trade and encouraging industrial development in the border region. In addition, the province will continue to collaborate on the implementation of coal conveyor projects, upgrade and open auxiliary border gates, and promote initiatives to enhance border trade development between Vietnam and Laos.

Border trade activities show positive growth In recent years, the province’s border trade activities have seen significant positive results, meeting the travel and shopping needs of residents, thanks to local government investment and upgrades. This progress has contributed to the socio-economic development of border areas and strengthened the special friendship between Vietnam and Laos.

The Department of Industry and Trade has led efforts to organize meetings to disseminate the Vietnam-Laos border trade agreement and relevant circulars from the Ministry of Industry and Trade. A multidisciplinary team has surveyed auxiliary border gates and access points to select and recommend to the provincial People’s Committee a list of authorized auxiliary border gates for trade activities.

The department has advised the provincial government to recognize 13 traders in Vietnam-Laos border trade and has addressed requests from residents and merchants for access to these gates. Additionally, agreements have been finalized on locations and routes for several energy connection projects from Laos to Vietnam, in line with national electricity development plans.

In the border region, the department has supported production and business units with funding of nearly VND2.5 billion (US$97,860), which includes VND800 million ($31,315) for two trade promotion projects and VND1.7 billion ($66,534) for the application of advanced machinery and equipment from industrial promotion funds.

The provincial authority organized a conference to promote cooperation in the industry and trade sector between Quang Tri Province and neighboring Lao provinces, as well as connected businesses from both countries through various trade fairs.

Currently, border trade infrastructure is primarily concentrated in Huong Hoa District. This includes the Lao Bao Border Market, four constructed markets of Huong Phung, Tan Phuoc, Tan Long, and Thuan and 12 gas stations in border areas.

Additionally, there are two supermarkets located near border gates. In the Lao Bao International Border Gate area, two warehouse projects are under construction, alongside waiting areas for incoming and outgoing goods.

Numerous initiatives have contributed to a 3.7-fold increase in border trade over the past decade, with figures rising from $241.9 million in 2015 to an expected nearly $895.7 million in 2024.

Notably, border trade has already increased compared to 2023. The total two-way trade volume through the province’s international border gates reached $835.3 million, with Lao Bao accounting for $593.2 million and La Lay for $242.1 million, marking a 27.8% increase year-over-year. Exports were valued at $233.5 million (up 86.7%), while imports reached $601.8 million (up 13.8%). Exported goods primarily included consumer products, construction materials, fertilizers, and petroleum, while imports mainly consisted of wood, rubber, energy drinks, coal, sugar, and agricultural products.
