Quang Tri resident hands over rare red-faced monkey to authorities

A resident of Quang Ninh Commune, Quang Tri Province, voluntarily handed over a rare red-faced monkey to local authorities on July 3, according to the commune police.

The man, identified as Le Van Tuan, born in 1965, said the monkey had repeatedly entered his property and caused damage. Weighing around 9 kilograms, the animal was captured by Tuan, who later recognized it as a protected wildlife species and reported it to the authorities.

Quang Ninh Commune police coordinated with the local Forest Protection Department to document the case and complete transfer procedures. The monkey will be cared for and monitored before being released back into the wild.

The red-faced monkey, Macaca arctoides, is listed under Group IIB of endangered and rare forest animals protected by Government Decree No. 84/2021/ND-CP.

The species is also protected under the CITES convention, which governs international trade in endangered wild fauna and flora.
