Deputy Chairman of the Quang Tri People’s Committee Hoang Nam has approved a project on “Malaria prevention for mobile populations in 2024-2026” funded by Health Poverty Action (HPA), a UK-based non-governmental organization that strengthens the poorest and most marginalized people in their struggle for health in 18 countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

The project will be implemented in Xy, A Doi, and Thuan communes of Huong Hoa District, Quang Tri Province from now through the end of 2026.
The project aims to support the prevention of malaria among mobile populations, particularly those who sleep in fields or go into the forest, as well as those who cross borders, toward ending Artemisinin-resistant P.falciparum by 2025 and eliminating malaria in Vietnam by 2030.
Malaria, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), is a life-threatening disease spread to humans by some types of mosquitoes. It is mostly found in tropical countries. People with malaria often experience fever, chills, and flu-like illness. Left untreated, they may develop severe complications and die.
For a considerable amount of time, Quang Tri has been one of the most severely affected provinces in Central Vietnam by malaria, particularly in the border districts with Laos like Huong Hoa. To eradicate malaria, the province’s Center for Disease Control has proactively implemented routine communication efforts, monitored the malaria situation, and employed rapid tests and microscopes to detect malaria cases early in key communes.
