Cua Viet Commune, located along Vietnam’s central coast, is positioning itself as a key driver of the marine tourism economy, aiming to turn its coastal advantages into a foundation for sustainable and comprehensive socio-economic growth.
Following the administrative merger of Gio Mai, Gio Hai, and Cua Viet Town, the new commune now spans nearly 51 square kilometers and is home to more than 21,400 residents.
With a gradually upgraded transport network, including estuary access, a storm shelter anchorage, and a fishing port, Cua Viet holds immense potential in fisheries, coastal services, and tourism.

Promising signs of marine economic growth
In recent years, Cua Viet has witnessed steady progress in developing its marine economy. In the first half of 2025, the commune recorded a seafood purchasing and processing volume of 7,500 tons.
Aquaculture covers nearly 144 hectares, featuring diverse, high-yield farming models such as rice-fish cultivation in freshwater fields, cage fish farming on rivers, and integrated shrimp-crab-fish farming based on seasonal cycles.
The commune’s average annual seafood output reaches 11,621 tons.
Cua Viet has also developed a fairly complete system of fishing logistics services. It is home to a Class III fishing port (Cua Viet Port), a storm shelter and fishing port complex in northern Cua Viet, 16 offshore supply vessels, seven marine engine repair workshops, and 125 seafood processing facilities.
Its fishing fleet is large and diverse, comprising over 300 offshore vessels, 198 nearshore boats, and 65 river-based craft. Local fishermen have invested in upgrading boats, gear, and equipment to enhance efficiency and safety at sea.
Communal initiatives such as offshore fishing groups, self-managed docks, and cooperative fishing teams have not only enhanced efficiency but also strengthened mutual support in rescue operations and national sovereignty protection efforts.
Tran Hong Linh, a fisherman from Xuan Ngoc, said his family has upgraded their boats with modern gear and now confidently fishes in major offshore zones. He owns two vessels, 715CV and 430CV.
His household earns over VND10 billion (US$382,497) annually and provides employment for 17 local workers.
“Like many other fishermen here, we’re proud of our successful trips and the improved quality of life they bring,” he said.
Unlocking coastal tourism, service potential
Cua Viet’s 7.5-kilometer coastline is also being transformed into a vibrant seaside destination. More than 70 tourism service businesses now operate at Gio Hai and Cua Viet beaches, attracting up to 35,000 visitors annually and generating about VND1.5 billion ($57,374) in tourism revenue.
Local hotels and restaurants are increasingly investing in facilities to meet growing demand for leisure, entertainment, and event hosting.
One notable example is the four-star Camel Golden Sea Resort, located in the heart of Cua Viet Beach.
Nguyen Truong Phu, the resort’s General Manager, said: “With our central restaurant and large event hall, we’ve welcomed many domestic, international, and even overseas Vietnamese visitors since early 2025. They choose Cua Viet for relaxation, cultural and sporting events. We’ll continue to innovate to make guests’ stay here truly memorable.”
Cua Viet’s strategic position along the East-West Economic Corridor and within the Southeast economic zone also gives it a significant advantage in attracting multi-sector marine development.
Region’s transport infrastructure continues to improve, with inter-commune roads being upgraded and paved, making it easier for goods and tourists to move across the region.
The operation of the Cua Viet Fishing Port, alongside with ongoing infrastructure projects, is gradually meeting the region’s development needs.
In particular, Quang Tri’s authorities have invested in upgrading Cua Viet Beach under Phase II of the “Greater Mekong Subregion Tourism Infrastructure for Inclusive Growth” project.

Strategy for a resilient marine future
Le Van Thong, Chairman of the Cua Viet People’s Committee, said the commune is committed to enhancing the value and branding of its marine economy by implementing national and provincial strategies. These include the Central Party’s Resolution No. 36-NQ/TW and the Provincial Party Committee’s Action Program No. 144-CTHD/TU on Vietnam’s sustainable marine economic development through 2030 with a vision to 2045.
Cua Viet continues to promote responsible fishing practices and refine policies to support sustainable fisheries.
The commune encourages locals to invest in modern vessels, apply advanced technology in aquaculture and seafood processing, and promote its unique coastal products.
Local authorities are also calling for increased provincial support to finalize essential infrastructure like fishing ports and logistics hubs, while seeking investment in tourism services and seafood processing.
Future plans include completing land clearance for the expansion of Cua Viet Port, resettling residents from Hamlet 7, and constructing a coastal road linking to the East West Economic Corridor.
Cua Viet is set to welcome new resort and tourism complexes that connect to Cua Tung Beach, with enhanced coastal management aimed at ensuring sustainability, safety, and an improved visitor experience.
