Quang Tri returns 40-kg sea turtle back to ocean

An olive ridley sea turtle was released back to the sea on December 14 at the beach of Trieu Van Commune, Trieu Phong District, Quang Tri in the partnership of the Management Board of Con Co Island Marine Protected Area, Trieu Van Border Guard Station, and Trieu Van Commune People’s Committee

The olive sea turtle of 40kg was found trapped by Le Huu Phieu, Le Huu Tay and Nguyen Quang Hoa, fishermen inTrieu Van Commune, Trieu Phong District when they went fishing at sea, according to Deputy Director of the Con Co Island Traffic Management Board Tran Khuong Canh.

The fishermen immediately notified the sea turtle conversation volunteers of Trieu Van Commune and the Management Board of Con Co Island Marine Protected Area for rescue instructions. These agencies coordinated with the Trieu Van Border Guard Station and local government in receiving olive ridley sea turtle, checking its health, and releasing it safely back to the sea.

The olive ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys Olivacea) is an endangered animal according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It is also one of five rare sea turtle species in the Vietnam Red Book that is seriously threatened and needs to be preserved.
