The vault holds 80 unexploded war remnants in total, including some extremely dangerous objects, according to members of the Norwegian People’s Aid/RENEW (NPA/RENEW) project. Some were dismantled immediately upon their arrival and some others were moved to a secure area.

Since November 2023, NPA/RENEW has deployed four teams to detect unexploded bombs (UXBs) in an area of 480,000 square meters in An My Village. The completion is scheduled for January 2024.

According to government statistics, among localities affected by UXO, Quang Tri has been impacted the most, with over 82% of its surface being contaminated. Up to 1.2% of its people are UXO victims, with children making up 31% of the total. As many as 18% of Vietnam’s land is contaminated by bombs and mines.

The Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA) has worked in Vietnam since 2008 following the signing of an MoU with Quang Tri to support the development of Project RENEW’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) capacity. NPA’s operational footprint now covers all of Quang Tri and Thua Thien-Hue provinces.

Project RENEW was established in 2001 as a joint effort between Quang Tri and interested international NGOs to “restore the environment and neutralize the effects of the war” – with the main focus on the unexploded ordinance.
