My Thuy International Port JSC on March 25 inaugurated the construction of My Thuy Deepwater Port in Hai Lang District’s Hai An Commune.
The port project covers an area of nearly 690 hectares, approved by the Prime Minister on January 4, 2019.
The VND14 trillion (US$565 million) port was designed to have ten wharves, with a capacity of receiving ships with a tonnage of 100,000 tons. Construction is scheduled to be completed in 2036.

My Thuy Port is a critical infrastructure project for Quang Tri and regional socio-economic development, as it is the closest gateway to the East Sea on the East-West economic corridor.
The port holds a strategic position in goods transportation. It is expected to boost investment in the province’s Southeast Economic Zone and industrial parks and connect Quang Tri to the localities in Laos and Thailand.
On the other hand, the project provides job opportunities for tens of thousands of locals, boosts import-export, expands international economic relations, and makes a breakthrough in the province’s economic transformation.
During the implementation, the project encountered many difficulties and obstacles related to investment procedures, overlapping plans, site clearances, and time-consuming investor capability restructuring.
According to Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee Vo Van Hung, the need to transport goods on the East-West Economic Corridor through seaports in Quang Tri and the Central Coastal region is increasing, so the building and completion of the synchronous transportation infrastructure system becomes an urgent issue.
“It is a great opportunity and a motivation to boost the completion of My Thuy Port and place it into efficient operation,” he said.

The deployment of this key project and others such as Quang Tri Industrial Park, Quang Tri Airport, Hai Lang Gas Power Plant, 15D National Highway connecting La Lay International Border Gate and My Thuy Deepwater Port are the premise to building the Quang Tri Southeast Economic Zone into a dynamic, modern economic driver for the Central Coastal region, the country, and ASEAN, he said.
To ensure the project is completed on schedule, the provincial chairman urged investors to allocate adequate human resources, materials, and equipment and develop a detailed construction plan to ensure the project’s feasibility.
He also asked local government agencies and people in Hai Lang District and Hai An and Hai Khe communes to cooperate with investors and handle all difficulties and obstacles.
“In addition to the goal of transportation and circulation of goods for socio-economic development, the port operations will create jobs for locals, contribute to providing social welfare, promote service industries development, and accelerate the building of new living areas for the people,” he said.
At the ceremony, project investors and contractors pledged to deploy the construction on schedule and ensure efficiency and quality.
They aimed to complete and bring into operation two wharves in 2025 to maximize investment efficiency for the provincial socio-economic development.
