In its decision No. 1737/QD-TTg approving Quang Tri’s development plan for 2021-2030 with a strategic vision to 2050, the government aims to establish the province as a clean energy hub in central Vietnam. To achieve this, Quang Tri is prioritizing sustainable development, maximizing its energy potential, and advancing planning for wind and power projects.

Quang Tri, with strong renewable energy resources, has average wind speeds exceeding 7m/s, over 1,910 hours of sunlight per year, and high solar radiation levels. It’s obvious that the province holds significant potential for offshore wind and gas power development.

Thanks to government support and investor engagement, Quang Tri has made strides in energy development. The province currently has 31 approved wind power projects with a capacity of 1,180MW, three solar projects with a capacity of 150MW, one coal-fired power plant with a capacity of 1,320MW, two gas power projects with a capacity of 1,840MW, and 18 hydropower projects with a capacity of 260.5MW. As of January 2025, the total commercial capacity has reached 1,119MW, strengthening Quang Tri’s position as a clean energy hub.

To advance the progress, the province has proposed integrating 1,500-2,000MW of onshore wind and 2,600-4,000MW of offshore wind into the national power plan. Additionally, Quang Tri aims to develop green hydrogen and ammonia production, import electricity from Laos, and expand cooperation in the mineral and agricultural sectors.

Meanwhile, Vietnam Electricity (EVN) is enhancing transmission infrastructure, including the 500kV Quang Tri substation and key transmission lines set for completion in 2025. These projects will improve power distribution, strengthen grid stability, and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources into the national network.

Quan Tri remains committed to expediting power project implementation, with a target of 1,500MW by 2025 and 6,000-10,000MW by 2030. The province is focused on expanding onshore and offshore wind, natural gas, and LNG power, reinforcing its ambition to become a leading renewable energy center in Vietnam.
