On May 29, two fishermen Nguyen Van Phong and Nguyen Van Phu in Tan Mach Village, Vinh Thai Commune, Vinh Linh District, Quang Tri found an olive ridley turtle weighing about 15kg was trapped in a trap cage.

Shortly after, sea turtle conservation volunteers in Vinh Thai Commune came to check health of the turtle and together with these two fishermen return the turtle to the sea safely.

According to Director of Con Co Island Marine Protected Area (MPA)’s Management Board Nguyen Van Hoa, the turtle is one of five sea turtle species listed as endangered, valuable, and prioritizing protection in Vietnam.

Olive ridley turtles are the smallest and most abundant of all sea turtles found in the world, inhabiting warm waters of the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans. These turtles, along with their cousin the Kemps ridley turtle, are best known for their unique mass nesting called Arribada, where thousands of females come together on the same beach to lay eggs. Though found in abundance, their numbers have been declining over the past few years, and the species is recognized as Vulnerable by the IUCN Red list.

In order to protect sea turtles in 12 communes, coastal towns, and the Con Co island district, the Con Co Island MPA Management Board has so far established a network of 26 volunteers. The volunteers have helped the Con Co Island MPA Management Board with a variety of tasks, including receiving and rescuing sea turtles as well as researching sea turtle spawning grounds, instructing fishermen, and promoting protection initiatives.

As a result, the activities have contributed to increasing public awareness of the significance of marine conservation in general and sea turtle protection in particular.
