HaiLang LNG Power Plant to include 90,000-ton capacity specialized port

The Ministry of Transport has sent a document to the Quang Tri Provincial People’s Committee, the Vietnam Maritime Administration, and a consortium of investors—including T&T Group and South Korean partners Hanwha Energy, KOGAS, and KOSPO—approving the addition of a specialized port, maritime channel, and breakwater to support the LNG Hai Lang Power Plant – Phase 1.

This addition will be incorporated into the detailed plan for the Central Coast port group.According to the Ministry of Transport, My Thuy Port is planned to serve the Southeast Quang Tri Economic Zone, facilitating transshipment for Laos and Thailand. This development is part of Vietnam’s port development plan for 2021-2030, with a vision extending to 2050.

The port is expected to feature general berths, as well as container and liquid cargo berths for ships up to 100,000 tons, along with additional liquid cargo berths at the Quang Tri Power Center for vessels up to 150,000 tons. The development will align with market demand and investment capacity, ensuring synchronization with supporting infrastructure, including maritime channels and breakwaters.The Hai Lang LNG Power Center project, approved by the Prime Minister as part of Power Plan VII, is scheduled to begin operations between 2026 and 2027. As one of the national priority projects for the period 2021-2030, the addition of specialized LNG ports, maritime channels for ships up to 90,000 tons, and breakwater systems at My Thuy Port is consistent with the approved master plan.To advance investment procedures for maritime infrastructure supporting the Hai Lang LNG Power Plant – Phase 1, the Ministry of Transport has approved the inclusion of specialized ports, maritime channels for ships up to 90,000 tons, and breakwater systems at My Thuy Port. This falls under the Central Coast port group (Group 3) for the period leading up to 2020, with a long-term vision extending to 2030.On January 15, 2022, T&T Group and its South Korean partners began construction on the Hai Lang LNG Power Center project – Phase 1, with a capacity of 1,500MW and a total investment of US$2.3 billion. Located in the Southeast Quang Tri Economic Zone and covering over 120 hectares, it is the largest gas-fired power project in Quang Tri Province. The project includes an LNG terminal capable of receiving ships with capacities between 170,000 and 226,000 cubic meters, providing 1.5 million tons of LNG annually.
