The Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) will implement the Quang Tri 2 500kV substation and and transmission lines project, with a total investment exceeding VND1.3 trillion (US$50.8 million).
This decision was signed by Ha Sy Dong, Acting Chairman of the Quang Tri Provincial People’s Committee, on March 4.
The project will be located in Cam Lo District, covering an area of more than 11 hectares. Construction is set to begin in the second quarter of 2026, with an expected completion and commissioning date in the fourth quarter of 2027.
The initiative aims to enhance the capacity of renewable energy projects in Quang Tri and the surrounding areas, ensuring a stable and reliable electricity supply for regional economic and social development. It also seeks to reduce electrical losses and improve operational reliability in the transmission system.
Previously, EVN requested the provincial government and the Ministry of Industry and Trade to report to the Prime Minister regarding the assignment of the EVN’s Generation Corporation 1 (EVNGENCO1) as the investor for the Quang Tri Thermal Power Plant, classified as an urgent power project under the 2024 Electricity Law.
The Quang Tri Thermal Power Plant project, with an investment of nearly $2.2 billion and a capacity of 1,320 MW, will be developed by the Electricity Generating Authority International of Thailand (EGATi) under a BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) model.
On July 3, 2024, the Ministry of Industry and Trade sent a letter to EGATi, agreeing to halt the project’s implementation. Since then, no new investor has been identified for the Quang Tri Thermal Power Plant.
If assigned as the investor, EVNGENCO1 is expected to begin construction of the plant is expected to commence in the third quarter of 2027, with commercial operations slated for the fourth quarter of 2030.
In October 2024, the province submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Industry and Trade to convert the The Quang Tri Thermal Power Plant project from coal to LNG, while increasing its capacity from 1,320 MW to 1,500 MW.
