The central province of Quang Tri is determined to put into operation the Center for Social Protection and Rehabilitation for People with Disabilities as soon as possible, said Vice Chairman of the provincial People"s Committee Hoang Nam.

“The new center will facilitate the local people with disabilities (PWDs) and those in neighboring provinces and Laos to access social protection and rehabilitation services,” Nam told a meeting with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and South Korea"s Medipeace in Quang Tri Province early this month.

The center will be designed like the Seoul Institute of Social Welfare (Korea) model.

At the meeting, the participants discussed the preparation steps for constructing the Center for Social Protection and Rehabilitation for People with Disabilities and key issues to implement the project quickly.

The center will locate in Dong Luong Ward, Dong Ha City, with a total investment of about US$12.67 million. Of the sum, the non-refundable aid package of KOICA is $12 million, and the reciprocal capital from the provincial budget is $670,000.

Nam said the province has been working hard with relevant ministries and branches, completing necessary procedures to submit to the Prime Minister for approval on project investment policy.

He hoped KOICA and Medipeace would continue cooperating with local authorities to remove obstacles and create consensus in building a joint action plan on the coordination mechanism between the sides.

For his part, KOICA Vietnam Country Deputy Director Choi Jeyun highly appreciated the active cooperation of Quang Tri authorities in implementing activities related to the project.

KOICA and Medipeace have implemented many projects in Vietnam and Quang Tri Province over the past years to improve the living standards of people with disabilities.
